Overview:

Materials Science (MS) includes the study of the structure and properties of any material (e.g., metals, polymers, and biomaterials). This knowledge may be used to create new types of materials with properties that have been tailored for specific purposes. Materials informatics studies the collection, classification, storage, retrieval, transfer, and dissemination of MS information to support the advancement of knowledge in this domain.  Supporting interactions between MS research and education is an overarching emphasis of the Materials Informatics Lab.

The Materials Informatics Lab investigates research issues associated with MS:
  • data archiving
  • metadata
  • markup
  • controlled vocabulary
  • taxonomy/ontology
